1985 380SL fuel is getting in oil pan. Burns very rich, and runs very rough after starting. Any clues?

You need to check your fuel pressures first, and also find out if you have a leakdown issue.

To have fuel getting in with the oil would lead me to think you have a worn out engine or hole in the piston. I mean how else would fuel be able to get there?

Outside of the old school engines with a mechanical pump that could allow for gas to dump into the engine, what other way could gas get by the rings?

This is not to say your engine is for sure shot, just that I might start with a compression test first.

I concur with Drews seconding of the compression test.  :D

Did the OP ever get a chance to perform a compression test?

If the OP does not have a compression tester I suggest they check Harbor freight as they sell a nice little compression testing kit for under $20. That should work out to $50-$80 less than what a shop would charge to perform the test, plus you get to keep the compression tester.

I second that second, Harbor Freight is best for tools that would be used occasionally.

A worn or sticky fuel distributor may be the problem. Have it rinsed with cleaning fluid. If this fails, replace it with a refurbished unit.

I found that I can adjust the fuel / air mixture on my 380 by inserting a 3mm allen wrench in the whole on top of the air cleaner. Turn clockwise to lean it out.

The last time I checked, you must turn counter clockwise to lean it out

You may be correct I could be confused as I had to go back and fourth until I found the right setting.
