Have you ever worn two pairs of glasses at the same time?

Yes but I'm embarrassed to say where the 2nd pair was located.

This is a real PIA. That's the only way I can see my monitor.

SWMBO occasionally hands me a piece of broken jewelry to repair.  I get out my father's magnifying visor and put on two pairs of readers so that I can see the fine detail that I have to fix.

My problem without contacts is in the 2' - 4' range, which I where I spend most of my days. Everything else is fine.

Jewelry repair? Hey Drew, ya hear that? Dig can fix the family jewels!

Expect to wear magnifiers (reading glasses) to see in that range.  There may be trouble if you operate at the extremes of those distances.  A quick change from 2' to 4' (a 2' difference) is not an easy transition for reading glasses.  Refocusing requires a bit of lag time.  You may already experience this but just don't realize it since you've long ago adjusted to your current vision correction.

Once your close vision is your only problem, you will become more acutely aware of it, especially as it continues to deteriorate.  It's not as bad as I am making it sound but just something to be aware of.

Canceled. My ophtho has now identified the problem, a corneal ulcer, which has now, over the course of not wearing contacts for several days, healed toward my ability to resume wearing contacts. At least, that's how it seems so far...

I've always liked contacts. I've worn 'em and slept in 'em for a week at a time for years. One night per week, I take them out a couple of hours before bed, then put new ones in in the morning. There is no gain from LASIK, only an attempt to hold even. If I can't continue to sleep in contacts at some point, I'll revisit the surgery option.
