75 300D Alternator Troubleshoot
« on: June 19, 2009, 08:54:07 AM »
My battery light may or may not come on when key is in glo-plug position.  The light is dim at low RPM  goes out at higher RPM.  However, the alternator is not charging. Is it possible to replace the diode or brushes without removing the alternator?  If not, which is the best way to R & R the alternator.  I have a big fat AC compressor in the way from the top.  I was thinking through the front by removing the radiator.

I'm quite certain you'll need to remove the alternator in order to effect a repair.

I have the same problem with my 83 300D.  The alternator is very new.  I pulled it off and had a bench test performed.  It works great.

I checked the plug on the back of the alternator and it has battery voltage and a good ground when the key is off.  With the ignition on, there is no voltage at either prong.

The battery is in good shape and will start the car easily when charged manually.  The ground looks good.  Batt terminals look clean and tight.

Checked and cleaned all fuses.  #5 shows no voltage and there's no indication as to what it is in the legend.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?  Are the diodes in the alternator?  If so then they passed.
