1986 560SL Black Soot
« on: February 10, 2009, 07:05:48 PM »
 ???

My wife and I recently purchased a "project" 1986 560 SL.  One of the issues with the car that I can't figure out is the black soot from the muffler.  We've replaced the O2 sensor and fuel distributor, but no luck....what else could it be?

Thanks is advance.

Welcome,
Soot can come from being overly rich or overly lean (incomplete combustion) The first thing to do is make sure the mechanical part of the system is set up right. The computer wants the mechanical part of the system in certain parameters so that it can vary the mixture rich or lean for conditions.

First I would make sure the differential pressures are right, then move to setting up the mixture so you have proper current draw on the EHA.

Your upper chamber pressure should be 6.1 to 6.5 bar and lower chamber should be .4 bar less. This is with the EHA disconnected.

Your EHA current should be oscillating between -1 and +3 ma at idle and warm.

Do you have a CIS type fuel gage? Do you know how to hook it up? I need to get a feel for how much you know about this system so I don't move too fast or bore you by moving too slow.

Unfortunately, I don't have the tools for this job.  I took it to the shop and had them adjust the mixture.  Runs GREAT now.

Thanks for your help.
