Hello out there, this is my first post. I have a beautiful older style coupe (380 SEC ) which I enjoy driving, however after recently having some work done on the engine, thus needing the air con disconnected, I then had it re gassed with some new hoses attached as now using a more modern gas.
But although it has new gas & aircond running etc it doesn't blow cold air out, and prior to this all was working fine and quite cold when temp control turned to min.
I  would appreciate if any one has an idea of what could be the problem as the mechanic checked it all saying its all working, but cannot explain why no cold air.
I wonder if there is a relay switch or something connected to climate control which thinks its colder than it is therefore not allowing it to go any colder as heating still works fine but not needed whilst its very hot here this summer.

Hi csiderob,

Likely you previously had R12 gas in the car. Now you probably have R134a which is not as effective as the old gas. The old gas is not produced anymore and you have to chase around really hard to find some one who stocks it. If you do find it use it. The new gas makes the compressor work harder and wears it out quicker. You can get a drop in gas for R12 in Oz called Minus 30 by Hychill.This works just as good as R12 if not better. Contact the company directly and you will find a distributor in your area. Not many people use it as it is propane based therefore flammable. This does not compare to the volume of gas in the LPG tanks under cars or vapours from petrol etc. (people don't think about these products they are sitting on!) I have Minus 30 in my cruiser and merc. Works great.

C R ...I take it that the system was when you said (regassed) your mechanic had either replaced the R12 with a drop in refrigerant usually called freeze12 or Hot Shot. If the mechanic replaced the gas with R134a...then he should have drained out the mineral oil in the compressor, and at the same time, flushed the mineral oil out of the condenser and evaporatorcoils. Then the reciever dryer in the liquid line should have been changed. Does the pipe (larger) one coming to the compressor get cold to the touch? Is the compressor clutch allowing the compressor to rotate and pump? Can you feel cold air coming out of the blower outlets in the cabin? A R134a retrofit done properly will cool, but the surface area (s) of the evaporator and condenser are not adequate for the expansion heat absorption of the new gas. You will get cooling lets say, on a 78 to 84° day, but as the temp. trends toward the 90° and higher temps...that's when you will feel the capacity inadequate. in other wards...a 24,000 btu system is now operating as a 19,000 btu system. If there is little air blowing (force) out the outlets...check for a blocked filter if the car has one, and or a dust matted evaporator coil. that would cause the compressor low pressure cutout to open and short cycle the compressor. Evidence of that would be a ice cold suction pipe at the compressor, (the larger pipe) ... If the comp. is operating...the smaller pipe (discharge to condenser) would be hot after running for a few minutes. It can be very hot so don't get burned. If you have the issue taken care of already...this may be some future assitance later on....Stay Cool....ps: I'm a retired 45 years HVACR Mechanic..Hope this helps a little!
