Best tools to have while at the Junkyard
« on: February 15, 2009, 09:01:48 AM »
What is a good list of tools to have with you while at the junkyard pulling new life into your ride?
I have found the hard way that I needed my Torx set while pulling a cylinder head out :'(  Luckily I was able to summon the wife on the phone and she tossed me my set from over the junkyard fence but to my horror the set was for a 1/2 drive which I didn't carry.  There was no way in hell I could convince her to go back home and then come back. :-[
Oh, don't forget to have a cheater bar to get some leverage.
Let's see your list!

I would think that Crazy Ray's would have given you a frequent user card by now, allowing you to check out the tools you need as you go...kinda like the library.

I got a steering box for my 560SEL for $25.  It's got no leaks!
I love the junkyard.

Did you use an open end or a socket?  :o

Ah, let me tell you, it was HELL trying to get it out.  The three bolts on the chassis were tight so I used a 17mm socket with a breaker.
The next challenge was the steering damper/shaft that connects both wheels and the next one was the steering shaft connected to the right wheel.  I had to hammer them out with a lot of blows.
Strangely enough, I had to hit the ends of the connecting duhuky with the steering box per recommendation of a passer by who felt sorry for my sorry ass as I cursed a storm trying to hit the knuckles from the top and bottom.
Next time I know exactly what to do!

This reminds me of the first time I pulled a sunroof mechanism out; I had to come back twice to get it out.  Now I can remove the whole thing in less than 20 minutes without breaking a thing.

Some parts on these W126's are just a pain to get to.
Back on topic I suppose.

I always carry a portable Crescent toolbox with me.

Probably the best $90 I've ever spent. I keep it in my car at all times and because it's slim and has a nice handle, it's easy to carry on those junkyard walks. There has never been a time where there wasn't a tool I needed inside this box. If I needed a breaker bar or something, I found some old lug wrench from a Toyota or something lying around and used it. I use whatever is around on the yard.

Nail Clippers.  Hirschmanns can be SO unforgiving.

Actually, a good set of vise grips for those times when you just can't squeeze pliers hard enough.

She tossed you from over the fence? You must be hung like a horse!

I myself find that a BFH works wonders when having to goto the Junk yard. I can remember in my younger years going to the junk yard just to save a customer some money. In the end it just took a bunch of my time, lost me money, and made for very muddy shoes. Now days I just tell the customer to go get the part.

i haven't been to a j/y in a long, long time but flat and phillips screwdrivers, channel locks and at least a knife or sidecuts. and it depends what i am hunting for, if it's for my nissan then 10mm, 12mm, 14mm and 17mm.. if it's for a domestic priduct, then 3/8;1/2;5/8;3/4... that's all you ever need.

Old Falcons are just so damned cool now.

I had a '64 back in the day.  I plan to never own another.

I agree, those old Falcin's were great, especially the one with the 8 cyclinders.
