Rear Axel Shafts in my 1988 300TE
« on: May 18, 2010, 09:45:45 AM »
Hello,
I have a clicking/clunking sound in the rear end of my car.   It is a cyntrifical noise.     It is intermitent, but is getting worse - of course.    It was only when going around corners, and now happens sometimes when going down the road.     Sometimes it goes away completely.      One mechanic said that I need new rear axel shafts.     The noise usually goes away when the car is raised off the wheels, and other mechanics don't have a clue.
Are the rear axel shafts hard to remove and re-install?    Can I use the ones off my parts car, or should I buy new?
Some mechanics have said that they never go bad.      My car has only 308,000 miles.     Yes, it still runs and looks great.
      Thanks very much.     Jere
