87 560 sl smokes
« on: August 13, 2010, 07:24:11 AM »
I have an 87 560sl which uses oil, produces blue/ grey smoke when cold and has at times smoked after it has warmed up. It is obviuosly in need of help. I am looking for options to correcting these issues. First of all, what is the most likely cause of the smoke. Is this something that might be corrected short of a complete re-build. I anticipate a complete re-build is in order. Re-building the engine presonally is out of may comfort zone. Does anyone have experience with a re-builder they could recommend? What is a ball park cost for a re-build?  I understand that the engines in these cars were de-tuned to meet mileage and/or emissions requirements.  Are there any companies in the US that improve performance when re-building? Are perfomance enhancements recommeded or should I stay with a stock re-build. Any help is greatly appreciated.
