Forum look redux
« on: February 28, 2009, 10:38:38 PM »
I find it a matter of interest that the voting on the forum look took less time than the ultra speedy passage of the stimulus bill.

I am not pleased with the alternating light and dark greys as the posts in the dark areas are not as easy to read.

We settled on this theme at least two weeks ago, but may have neglected to change everyone's settings before today. You can go into your Profile and change the theme back to what you like, but some themes were for an earlier version of the forum software and seem a bit buggy now (i.e. Mercury, my earlier preference). Also, I'm still adding features (I added a few more today, including new emoticons, an image gallery, and more), and would prefer not to have to test them on all of the available themes.

That said, I do know what you mean about the alternating grays, but after a couple of days, I'd become entirely accustomed to it and have since grown to like it a great deal.

To further the subject, I'm quite pleased with the look of the forum, and the new look of our redesigned website, but am not entirely pleased with the fact that they seem so distinct and disconnected. I haven't figured that one out yet, it's on my to-do list.

Anyways, let me know what you do, if you do change themes, please tell me which one. I'll probably go ahead and delete all of the rest.

No comprendo.

You don't want to change or you're not sure how to (Profile/Modify Profile/Look and Layout/Current Theme (change)). There are currently six available choices.

Ahhh...the change we hoped for has been audaciously found!  Many thanks.  Also, a rank of "Full Member" has been achieved!  Nice, that.

Each of your 50 posts is greatly appreciated. I see you chose Mercury, my personal favorite before it proved incompatible with the forum software upgrade. Nothing major mind you, but I'm kind of a nitpick for certain kinds of details (look toward the bottom of the main forum page).

Yikes, I just noticed a handful of other cosmetic issues with Mercury, I fixed some, but others I can't...

Oh well, as long as you're happy. :)

I just tried apollo and like it even better.  (I was falling asleep last night) The only bug so far is the "jump" window at the bottom does not have any locations to jump to.

I still think you should try the default for a couple of days. Once you're used to it, I think you'll agree it's by far the best option. I have three laptops, and a desktop with a new 22" monitor. I have no problems at all. The laptops in particular, are so bright that I wish it were a bit darker. I do recall an old 19" CRT monitor I had a year or so ago that would have had me screaming bloody murder though, 'cause it was just too damned dark to begin with.

Face it Dig, you may be a 'just right of center' guy in real life, but you're an outlaw rebel in forum land. As I recall, you're just about the only guy left still using the old BW forum theme, am I right?  ;)

What computer do you use for access most of the time, anyway? Desktop, laptop, monitor size, age?

Damn you!  Yes, I still use V1 over there because it completely eliminated the ads.

I ALWAYS use the Dell laptop.  The view is fine.  I'm just old and crotchety.

BTW:  Have you seen my German (Chinese) made microwave?

BMW Incinerator (I like it)

BTW, Apollo (my other favorite) also proved incompatible with the forum upgrade, and I had to kill it. I did however, add a bright shiny new fully-compatible theme for you, if you find you can't adjust. It ain't particularly pretty, but it is nice and bright for the hearing impaired.  ;)

Upon further review, it isn't fully compatible, but it does no harm. No access to RSS feeds or our new Gallery, where you'll find a pic of two mooses (mooses?) chatting at a bar, one with a Mercedes emblem caught in it's antlers, along with other wildlife shots that will seem more familiar. Maybe you should just try "SMF Default Theme - Core". It's also bright, and everything shows up and works as it should.

Oh, all right.

The rocks in your front yard are lined up in neat little rows, aren't they?

Not yet.

OK, I lessened the default theme's contrast between the light and dark post backgrounds now -- not quite as stylin' but easier to read. Do me a favor and see what you think.

Better?

How can I say no now that you've gone and changed a popular (41 users to 1 user) format to one that works for ME?

I accept.  Thank you.

Meanwhile, I do SO love a fine wingtip but brown is always an adventurous choice as you might get caught wearing them after the sun sets.  Bad Juju.

Always bet on black.

Yes, new and now gone. I'm just playing. The green background would go some toward consolidating the look of forum with that of the GS website. What did you think? I thought it looked better than I expected it to.

I liked it.  For a moment, I thought I was in Murphy Brown's unfinished Georgetown living room.
