1973 450SLC speedometer and transmission

The speedometer needle either bounces or goes to zero intermittently. Suspect the speedometer gear in the transmission. Can this gear be changed without pulling the transmission? Is a replacement gear available? The transmission also sometimes shifts between gears randomly - can this be related to the speedometer gear, or does it sound like a major rebuild?
